How much do removals cost in Somerset?
Most removal firms will not put a figure anywhere near their website, which leaves you ringing round for three quotes before you have any idea what you are dealing with. We would rather tell you. Below are the ranges we actually work to, what moves them up and down, and where you can sensibly save money.
Typical removal prices
These are guide ranges for the move itself, with a crew and a van, on a weekday. They do not include packing or storage, which are priced separately below.
| Size of property | Under 15 miles | 15–50 miles | 50–150 miles | 150+ miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bedroom | from £660 | from £660 | from £660 | from £660 |
| 2 bedrooms | from £900 | from £900 | from £900 | from £900 |
| 3 bedrooms | from £1,140 | from £1,140 | from £1,140 | from £1,140 |
| 4 bedrooms | from £1,500 | from £1,500 | from £1,500 | from £1,500 |
| 5 bedrooms or more | from £1,980 | from £1,980 | from £1,980 | from £1,980 |
Every one of these is a range rather than a price, because access, stairs, parking and how much there is to move all matter. The only way to get a firm figure is a survey, which is free and takes about three quarters of an hour.

What actually moves the price
- How much there is, not how many bedrooms. A three-bedroom house with a full loft and a garage can be more work than a four-bedroom house that has just been cleared out. The survey is really counting van loads.
- Access at both ends. A first-floor flat with no lift, a narrow lane a lorry cannot get down, or a permit needed for the parking bay all add time, and time is what you are paying for.
- Stairs. Every flight adds up. Two floors up at one end and three at the other is a different day from two bungalows.
- The date. Fridays and the last working day of the month are the busiest in the trade. Midweek and mid-month is usually easier to book and easier to price.
- Packing. The largest single thing you can add or take away. Packing a three-bedroom house properly is most of a day for two people.
- Anything awkward. A piano, a safe, a large fish tank, a marble worktop or a fitted wardrobe that has to come apart. Better told at the survey than discovered on the day.
Where you can sensibly save money
- Move midweek and mid-month if your dates are flexible. It is the single easiest saving.
- Clear the loft, the garage and the shed before the survey rather than after it. You are charged for what is there.
- Take the tip run yourself, or ask us to quote a clearance separately so you can compare.
- Part-pack. Do the wardrobes and the books yourself and let us do the kitchen, which is the job people most regret taking on.
- Sort out parking in advance. A permit costs a few pounds; a van that cannot get near the door costs an hour.
- Do not pay for storage you do not need. If the gap is a few days, ask whether we can hold the load on the van overnight instead.
Questions we are asked about price
- How much does it cost to move a 3 bedroom house?
- Locally, most three-bedroom moves fall in the range shown in the table above. Going further afield adds to it. Packing is the usual reason a move costs more than people expected.
- Do removal companies charge by the hour or a fixed price?
- We give a fixed price for a full move, agreed in writing after a free survey, so there is no meter running on the day. Small jobs and man-and-van work are charged by the hour, with the rate agreed before we start.
- Is there a deposit?
- No deposit is required to hold a date. You pay when the job is done.
- What is not included?
- Parking permits and any charges from a building management company, unless we have agreed to arrange them. Everything else is in the written price, including blankets, protection and insurance.
- Are removal costs cheaper midweek?
- Usually, yes. Fridays and month ends are the busiest days in the trade and the first to book up.
- How far in advance should I get a quote?
- Two to three weeks before the move is comfortable, though a survey costs nothing and there is no harm in getting one earlier so you know the figure.
